Potty Training - Days 7 to 10

Monday (7/4) was hard.  He had two full accidents and only made it to the potty once.  Again, the heat didn't help.  Thankfully I was armed with lots of extra underwear that my mother brought on sunday.  He showed an interest in the Thomas one, which is good.  Last time potty training was attempted he didn't want them on at all.

I decided to use a potty chart so I went online for inspiration.  I came up with a very simple design, three rows of four boxes, and drew it out on Tuesday (7/5) morning.  I outlined the boxes with colourful markers, drew in numbers 1-3 in the first three boxes and an ice cream bowl in the fourth.  I figured that since we've been averaging 1-2 accidents per day with a total of 4-5 times he pees that it would take him at least 24 hours to complete one row and get his ice cream.  Well, this boy surprised me!

No real accidents on Tuesday!!

And poop in the potty!

He had one 'mini' accident when I caught him about to poop under the table.  But after he took off the dirty underwear and sat on the potty he peed and poop some more on there.  I took this as good rather than bad since the previous two poops had been in his diaper or completely in his underwear.  Maybe now he realises that it's not so bad and will continue to poop in the potty, as long as I get him there in time, of course.

On Wednesday (7/6) we went to do laundry at my sister's.  She has a potty identical to the one we have here and he considers her home a second home so I figured it wouldn't be too different.  In the morning I happened to take off his diaper before his morning pee.  I got real excited because since I usually don't know when this happens so I sort of guess when the next pee will be based on when he had his morning milk.  He did pee in the potty and added his second sticker to his second row on the potty chart.

He peed twice in the potty at my sister's, which was good.  My suspicion that he does not like an audience when he pees was further confirmed.  Again, he slightly wet his underwear before actually going to the potty.  I think once he starts telling me that he has to go then this may stop.

My sister bought him some Thomas underwear to add to the ones she was holding for me.  I am now using them as rewards for successfully peeing in the potty on top of the sticker on the chart.

Today (7/7) was an interesting day and a bit frustrating.  I had to go to the a store and it was going to be about a 20 minute walk each way.  I missed the morning pee, his diaper was wet when I took it off.  So we left right after his morning milk feeling pretty confident that I had about 2 hours before I risked an accident.  We went and returned with no problem.

It's been real hot so I took water with me, which I gave to him while we were out.  When we got back I offered more water, which he drank.  So at 2.5 hours after his first drink I sat him down on the potty.  Nothing.  His underwear were wet, not soaked, so I knew he had to go but just couldn't get him to go.  I sat him down every time he looked like he wanted to go, which ended up being about every 40 minutes. Once he dribbled in there, barely enough to wet the bottom of the potty.  I was beginning to worry that something may be wrong with him since he doesn't go this long without peeing and he doesn't usually pee that little at a time.  Finally, after four hours and forty five minutes since his first drink, he peed.  It was a great relief.

He had one accident which was soon before he pooped.  Luckily I saw him about to poop and took him to the potty.  He looked a bit distressed at first but pooped in the potty and not in his underwear!!

One accident, proving he can hold it for a very long time, and another poop in the potty makes me feel like real progress is being made!

I made a new potty chart tonight since he went through the first one real quick.  This one is much more colourful and took me over an hour to make instead of about 20 minutes with the other one.  I don't know why I decided to put so much time into it.

First chart.  It started out just boxes but he pointed out that
the train was missing it's wheels.  I was supposed to draw in
a treat for each row but he went through it too quickly.

Second chart.  It was going to be just like the first but with an
engine.  Don't know how it ended up so colourful...
